Steve Mott, CEO, BetterBuyDesign.com, (Stanford, CT)
The Next Generation of Business on the Internet

While much of the focus of the first generation of eCommerce has been on the consumer side, businesses have gained sufficient insights from the innovations they have experienced to redefine the way they will be doing business in the next generation. Some of the key insights include:
Catalogs can be updated real-time, and so can inventories (using web-services applications), meaning shopping and ordering can be much more efficient
Pricing can also be effected real-time, in line with supply and demand that is polled constantly; this creates a more efficient marketplace and aligns pricing with immediate value (or options for purchase delivery)
Payments—especially for small businesses—no longer have to be held hostage to elaborate accounts receivable and accounts payable systems; real-time execution of guaranteed payments frees up immediate order execution, while the payment transpires in negotiated timeframes and channels
Marketing can be nearly universal, meaning smaller suppliers can vie for contracts wherever they can compete; new businesses that are inherently online continue to evolve
Customer service becomes part of the marketing proposition, as experienced online users find it easier and faster to self-service from websites, saving providers significant time and costs
This presentation will cover a number of examples of each of these insights and point to the way forward for Canadian companies, using US experience as a base.

Steve Mott is CEO of BetterBuyDesign.com, a virtual investment and consulting company specializing in brokering high technology ideas for the New Economy. Steve and a syndicated group of consultants provide advice and development expertise to e-business clients ranging from small startup firms to VCs to large global concerns.
